Procrastination

People have a hard time letting go of their problems. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer problems that is familiar

I am a prime example of procrastinating. When it comes to the dentist, I will push my appointments until they call my wife. We all have hang ups like this. Seems like it’s all in our DNA, and I wonder what ancestors we should all thank for that trait.

On a more serious note, this very laughable habit can cost people their lives. We are so caught up in our fixed view of importance. Ignoring pains in our chest because a client or boss has a deadline we must meet. I know, that only happens to other people right. Life is already a gamble as it is, and we choose to double down. The combination of “Not Now” and the unknown is more frightening.

We think the chest pain is the cause or problem, when it’s actually the condition. A pain in the chest may be a pain in the rear, but our habits are the cause. I would love to tell you to blame the boss or a client, but that wouldn’t be fair. They have their own causes and conditions to deal with.

If we are honest with ourselves it’s not their fault and it is not ours. None of us created the habit of over working, the desire for burrito over a salad, or bing watching over reading a book. I’m not saying we don’t contribute to this degradation, but we don’t have to carry that cross. These are habits developed over decades, centuries and possibly millennia or endlessly.

Breed by our ancestries desires to succeed, to provide more than they started with, and expect more of the next in line. In many ways you can take this to the root of humanity and life itself. What is a trees goal? To grow, spread its seed, and continue the lineage. As humans, we simply took this natural evolution and injected sentient thinking.

All this is remarkable, and in many ways admirable on a superficial level. Unfortunately, I can only speak to my time on earth and how I have contributed. In my own life I have justified many habits. The desires for comfort, gratitude, recognition, and companionship can provide serious motivation and material satisfaction. Many may read this and say that’s what we all dream to do. I would agree that we do, but I would proclaim we have been dealt a bad hand.
